Control Garden Pests

Pests can come to your garden in many different types of pests. Some of them are deer, mimute spider mites, rabbits, birds, slugs and many more.

If deers and rabbits are being a big pest to your garden. I know this from experience. To keep deers out of the garden you might want to put a very high fence around your garden. Now, you also have rabbit problems in your garden, you need to try to bury the fence in a trench at least 12 inches deep.

If you are having pests in your garden that fly like birds, the best wat to protect your crops is by putting netting over the crops and make sure none of the crops touch the top of the netting because a pest called cabbage butterflies will lay their eggs on the netting. Use hoop supporters made from stiff wire to support the net.

Another way to control pests is to use a lightweight fabric made from spun plyester which is doubly useful becuase it insulates your crops against cold and snow and keeps out the pests but lets air and water in. As you plants grows bigger the lightweight fabric will need to be loosen as your crops grows. When you need to weed out your garen you will need to move the cover, but put it back on when get through with your weeding. If you have fruit-bearing vegetable planted like squash and they are starting to flower you will need to move the cover so to allow the pollinators in.

In the area around your garden, you will need to use pieces of lumber or upturned pots. This will be where you will get snals and slugs which are not good for your garden so you need to get rid of them.

You can also use barrier or collars that are made form 4-6 inch open-ended section cut from plastic beverage bottles. You can push the collars into the soil to anchor them in place.

Another way to control pests in your garden is to handpick them.

Sometimes you have soil pests such as grubs, cutworms, root weevil, and European cranefly in your garden and that is a real problem. If you have these pest in your garden you will need to get nematodes which are sold in stores. This is sold as a powder that is diluted in water and spreads onto the soil. Always follow the instructions on the package and the invisible worms will kill the pests underground. The best way is to treat the whole vegetable garden all at once, along with all of the surrounding area, so you can prvent a new round of a invasion to pests.

There are only few species of insects that are actually bad. Most gardeners these days, will want to keep a balance between your garden plants and the good insects.

What you can do is leave a bunch of leaves and this will be a good cover for spiders, millipedes, and bettles as you will also attract slugs and snails.

If you can keep the slugs and spiders out of your garden, this will be very good.

Another way to do is to plant a few bright, open flowers into your vegetable plants or in borders that are close to your vegetable garden. Hover flies are attracted to flowers and their larvae are voracious aphid eaters. Daisy-Type flowers are very good at attracting bees to pollinate your fruit-bearing vegetable plants.

There are some effective natural insecticides that you can use on your garden plant pests. One of them is Bt and this is a powder that contains bacteria. The toxins they produce kill only caterpillars. Garlic and pepper sprays repel small inects pests, such as lacebugs, teafhoppers, asphids and mites. Horticultural oil will take care of caterpillars and it prevents some fungal diseases. Insecticidal soap is another killer of aphids. Milky spores are sprayed on their lawns to get hte Japanese beetels which will go after your vegetables. Neem oil which is taken from a seed of a tropical tree.

When you are going to spray your garden you will need to do it on a warm calm day. Early evening is the best time to do your spraying.

If you crop is ready to be harvest, always observe the safe interval between spraying and eating. Always wash all of your products that you harvest out of your garden.
