Garden Design

If you are going to design your garden, the first thing you need to do is to sit down at a table and make a design plan on paper. You will need to do this until you get it exactly like you want to have your garden.

Turning your dream of a garden into reality, you have to have a type of plan or design.

First Step!

The first thing that you will need to do is to start with a base map of your site. This is a good planning tool that you can use for your design.

Second Step

The next thing you need to do is to measure the yard, also indicate the corners of the house and property lines as reference points. Measure all the features in the yard that will be within or next to the garden, such as trees, sidewalks, and outbuildings. Back inside, put your dimensions on your graph paper, one square on the graph paper equals 1 to 2 feet of actual length.

You will need to make several copies of your map to record sun and shade pattern. On a sunny day in late spring or early summer, after the trees have leafed out, you should use your copies at different times color in areas so you will know when it is shaded or sunny. Another way to use the same information is to which areas will get the most and least sun. This also will help you place your garden beds and choose plants accordingly.

When you decide to place your garden, will determine what type of plants you can grow there. Go back to your plan and this should help you to make the right choice. Another thing you will need to considerate is how close your plants will be close to water so they can get water.

Third Step!

Your next thing to consider is the size of your garden. If you are going to have a perennial garden, you will need plenty of space for a variety of plants to have a full season of blooms. If you have enough space, you will need to have enough room, you can plant trees and shrubs, annuals, and bulbs.

If you want to have graduated layering of plants, the beds needs to be at least 3 to 4 feet deep. Linear beds with two-sided access can be 5 to 6 feet deep, because most people can reach 2 to 3 feet in the beds.

In your flower beds, you may still need to have stepping stones inside of your beds so you can do your maintenance. Your bed should fit with the overall design of the rest of your yard, and also be very comfortably to the house.

The Next Step!

To figure out your size and shape of your bed, you can use a garden hose. If you like the way it looks then put it on tracing paper.

Make a list of all the plants that you want to grow and you will need to make sure that all the plants will grow with your soil, light conditions and moisture. The next thing you will need to do is make a list with all the names of each plants, with room for the color, height, bloom time and spread of every plant. After you have made this chart this will be a valuable design too.

There could be different ways of trying to do your designs of your bed especially your flower arrangement.

Planting Your Garden!

As you combine plants, always consider the size and color of the flower, the form of the plant, and foliage texture. If you are going to have a small garden, many different colors does not look harmonious.

If your garden is going to be far away from the viewing points, it needs to be on a large side.

If you put too many plants together that have similar shapes, this will end up in a dull combination. The tallest plants needs to be put in the middle or toward the back. You can put plants that will go through each season.

After you have your design done, you can make four different overlays, one for spring, early summer, late summer, and autumn.

Summary of Text!

A garden is a lot of work, but the end result is definitely worth the work no matter what kinds of garden it is or how many you have.
